For a long time, scientists have faced the mystery of a massive magmatic “superstructure” beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean east of the Solomon Islands. The size of the Melanesian Boundary Plateau is 1,609 by 322 kilometers, and it continues to form.
In the new research, scientists suggest that the plateau was formed by four separate episodes of volcanism. This is a distinctive feature of the structure, as other similar objects were formed as a result of only one episode.
According to geologist Kevin Conrad, the formation of the plateau occurred over tens of millions of years and probably had little impact on the environment.
